iPhone Screen Time reports

Why Does Screen Time Say 24 Hours?

A full-day Screen Time total can come from combined devices, a continuously recorded app or website, or an inaccurate activity record. Isolate the cause before changing your habits or resetting the report.

If iPhone Screen Time says 24 hours, or nearly 24 hours, the number deserves investigation. You may have used several Apple devices during the day, but one iPhone cannot have 24 hours of active attention while you also slept, charged it, or left it untouched.

Start by finding out whether the 24-hour figure belongs to All Devices, one iPhone, one app, one website, or a category. Those are different problems. A combined report may be accurate across devices, while a single website recorded continuously is more likely to be a stale or incorrect activity entry.

Short answer

A 24-hour total is usually a device-selection or reporting problem

Open Settings, Screen Time, then See All App & Website Activity. Choose Day, select a completed date, and use Devices to select only your iPhone. Expand the full apps and websites list for that same day.

If the total drops after selecting one device, Share Across Devices explained the difference. If one app or website still shows almost the whole day, close it, restart the iPhone, update iOS, and watch the next completed day before using the reset option.

First identify where the 24 hours appears

Total

All Devices shows 24 hours

Your iPhone, iPad, and Mac activity can be combined when Share Across Devices is enabled. Overlapping use can create a total that would be impossible on one device.

Device

One iPhone shows 24 hours

If the iPhone-only total covers the entire day, expand its apps and websites. Look for one continuous entry, several entries that overlap, or a large grey portion that needs closer inspection.

App

One app shows nearly 24 hours

An app may have remained open, been attributed unexpectedly, or produced an inaccurate record. Compare the entry with battery activity and what you remember doing, but do not assume the two reports measure the same thing.

Web

One website shows nearly 24 hours

An open Safari tab, in-app browser, redirect, or stale website record may be involved. Close the relevant tabs and browser, restart, and check whether new time keeps accumulating.

How to diagnose a 24-hour Screen Time report

  1. Use one completed day. Yesterday is easier to inspect than today's total, which is still changing.
  2. Select only your iPhone. In the detailed Screen Time report, open Devices and choose the iPhone instead of All Devices.
  3. Expand apps and websites. Review the full list rather than adding only the first few visible rows.
  4. Find the largest entry. Check whether one app, website, or category explains most of the 24 hours.
  5. Inspect grey activity. Grey parts of the summary are recorded activity outside the highlighted categories, not a dedicated background-use label.
  6. Compare the same period. Make sure the total, app list, and any screenshot all refer to the same date and device.
  7. Record the evidence. Take screenshots before restarting or resetting so you can tell whether the next report changes.

Apple's current Screen Time guide explains how activity reports work across devices. It says that Share Across Devices shares usage data across compatible devices, while turning that setting off lets each device maintain separate Screen Time settings.

Can Share Across Devices create more than 24 hours?

Yes, an All Devices report can combine activity from an iPhone, iPad, and Mac signed in to the same Apple Account. If two devices are used at the same time, their recorded activity can overlap. The combined total is therefore not limited to the hours available on one device.

That does not mean Share Across Devices invents use. It changes the scope of the report. Select only your iPhone for a device-level view. If you turn Share Across Devices off, Apple says each device keeps separate Screen Time settings, so record any schedules or limits you rely on before changing it.

Why one app or website can look active all day

A nearly continuous entry can be caused by an app or web page remaining open, unusual attribution, or an inaccurate Screen Time record. The report alone may not reveal which explanation applies. Look for a clear test instead of guessing.

Close the named app or every tab for the named website. If it came from a link inside another app, close that in-app browser too. Restart the iPhone, then check the same entry later and again on the next completed day. If time keeps growing while the app or page is closed, the record is not a useful measure of active attention.

If you see an unfamiliar domain rather than a familiar app, read why Screen Time shows websites you did not visit. If the chart is mostly grey, learn what the gray bars in Screen Time mean.

Does background activity count as Screen Time?

Apple describes Screen Time as app and website activity, but its public guide does not give a simple rule saying every background process is counted like active attention. Audio, calls, navigation, open pages, communication, and app attribution can also look different from a stopwatch.

Do not use a 24-hour reading as proof that a background app consumed 24 hours of attention. First isolate the device and entry. If the report is impossible, treat it as a reporting issue until a repeatable test shows otherwise.

How to fix Screen Time when the 24-hour total is wrong

01

Close the affected app or page

Close the named app, browser tab, and any in-app browser associated with the continuous entry.

02

Restart the iPhone

After saving screenshots, restart and watch whether the entry begins accumulating again while it remains closed.

03

Install the latest iOS update

Update to the latest iOS version available for your device, then compare a new completed day rather than relying on the old record.

04

Test devices separately

Select one device in the report. If needed, temporarily turn off Share Across Devices after recording your current Screen Time setup.

05

Reset activity reporting last

Save your limits and schedules first. Apple says turning off App & Website Activity also turns off reporting, Downtime, App Limits, and Always Allowed.

To perform the last step, go to Settings, Screen Time, scroll down, and turn off App & Website Activity. Turn it on again and rebuild any controls you need. Use this only after the lower-risk checks because it can remove more than the incorrect report.

What not to conclude from a broken total

An impossible number is not a useful habit diagnosis. Do not punish yourself, delete every useful app, or set stricter limits based on data you have not validated. Screen Time can still be useful, but the device, date, and entry need to make sense first.

Once you have a believable report, separate useful activity from distracting activity. Calls, maps, study, reading, planning, language practice, banking, and intentional entertainment are not the same as an open-ended feed session. The goal is better phone time, not the smallest number at any cost.

For broader setup and sync problems, use the Apple Screen Time troubleshooting checklist. If the total is high but not exactly 24 hours, check why your iPhone Screen Time is so high. To understand the report by purpose rather than one total, read why not all screen time is equal.

Questions people ask

Why does my Screen Time say 24 hours?

The report may combine multiple Apple devices, contain one continuously recorded app or website, or be inaccurate. Select one iPhone and one completed day, then inspect the full activity list.

Can Screen Time be wrong by several hours?

Yes. If a report is physically impossible, check devices, dates, apps, and websites before treating it as real use. Restart and update before resetting activity reporting.

Does Share Across Devices make Screen Time exceed 24 hours?

It can combine overlapping activity from an iPhone, iPad, and Mac, so the All Devices report is not limited to one device's 24-hour day.

How do I reset an incorrect Screen Time report?

Save your settings, close the affected app or page, restart, update iOS, and turn App & Website Activity off and on only as a last step.

Does Timo require a subscription?

Yes. Timo requires an active Pro subscription to use its app features.
