iPhone Screen Time reports

How to Check Screen Time on iPhone

Open the full activity report, choose the right device and date range, then read app use, websites, pickups, and notifications in context.

If you only glance at the Screen Time chart in Settings, you can miss the details that explain the number. The full report shows which apps and websites were active, when you used them, how often you picked up your iPhone, and which apps sent the most notifications.

Those details matter because a long reading, study, navigation, or note-taking session is different from an hour lost to a feed. Checking Screen Time well means separating useful phone time from the sessions you actually want to change.

Quick steps

How to see your Screen Time report

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Screen Time.
  3. Tap See All App & Website Activity.
  4. Tap Day or Week for the view you want.
  5. Tap Devices to choose your iPhone or a combined report.
  6. Scroll down to inspect apps, websites, pickups, and notifications.

Apple's current Screen Time guide uses these labels for iOS 26. Labels can vary slightly on earlier iOS versions.

If Screen Time is not turned on yet

Go to Settings, Screen Time, tap App & Website Activity, then tap Turn On App & Website Activity. Screen Time starts collecting activity after you enable it, so a new report may need some real use before it becomes informative.

Turning on reporting does not automatically create an App Limit or Downtime schedule. Those are separate controls. If you want to set a daily allowance later, follow the guide to set App Limits on iPhone.

What each part of the Screen Time report means

Total

Daily or weekly activity

The chart shows activity over the selected period. Compare the same device and date range before drawing conclusions.

Apps

Most used apps and websites

Expand the list to see where the time went. Look for useful tasks and distracting sessions rather than judging every minute equally.

Categories

Grouped activity

Screen Time groups use into categories such as Entertainment and Creativity. Activity that does not fit a category can appear grey.

Pickups

How often sessions begin

Pickups and First Used After Pickup help show how often you start using the phone and which apps commonly begin those sessions.

Alerts

Notifications by app

The notification section can reveal whether one app keeps calling you back even when its total use still looks small.

Devices

One device or combined activity

If Share Across Devices is on, select your iPhone when you want to understand that device by itself.

Day view or Week view: which should you use?

Use Day view when you want to explain a specific result. Yesterday is often better than today because it is complete. Check the hours when activity rises, then expand the apps and websites below the chart.

Use Week view when you want to find a pattern. A weekly average can reveal repeated evening feed use, frequent workday checking, or a useful reading habit that one unusual day would hide.

You can swipe left and right through the available Screen Time history. Keep the same device filter while comparing periods so the numbers describe the same thing.

How to avoid misreading your Screen Time

  1. Check the device filter. A combined iPhone, iPad, and Mac report can look much higher than iPhone use alone.
  2. Use a completed period. Compare yesterday with another completed day, not this morning with a full day.
  3. Expand websites as well as apps. Browser activity can explain time that does not appear under the app you expected.
  4. Read grey activity carefully. Grey bars can represent uncategorized activity, not one hidden app.
  5. Check pickups and notifications. Repeated short checks may matter even when they add little to the total.
  6. Judge purpose and outcome. Reading, studying, planning, notes, maps, calls, and deliberate breaks can all be worthwhile phone time.

What to do when the total looks wrong

First, isolate your iPhone and choose one completed day. Expand every app and website, check grey activity, and compare the busiest hours with what you remember doing. If the report is still implausible, the guides to unexpectedly high iPhone Screen Time and Screen Time not working cover the next troubleshooting steps.

A strange number does not always mean you used the phone badly. Background audio, calls, navigation, combined devices, open web activity, or delayed reporting can all change how the total looks.

Turn the report into one useful change

Do not try to reduce the whole chart at once. Choose one repeated session that did not help, such as opening a feed after every notification or losing a study break to short videos. Keep the useful apps that supported what you intended to do.

Then change one cue or boundary. Disable a low-value alert, move the distracting app away from the first Home Screen, schedule a focused block, or decide on a purpose and duration before opening it. Check the same report again after a few completed days.
