You press the side button, put your iPhone down, and expect Screen Time to stop. Later, the total has increased. That can make it look as though iPhone counts every minute while the phone is locked.
The locked state is more complicated than simply on or off. The display may be dark, the Always-On Lock Screen may remain visible, audio or navigation may continue, a call may stay connected, or you may wake the Lock Screen several times without fully unlocking. Those activities need different explanations.
Short answer
Idle locked time is not the same as active Screen Time
Apple describes Screen Time as a report of device, app, and website use. It does not describe the feature as a timer that adds every minute between locking and unlocking the iPhone.
Activity can still appear while the device remains locked. Lock Screen interactions may be grouped under Home & Lock Screen. Audio, navigation, communication, or another ongoing app task may appear under an app. A delayed or inaccurate report can also make time seem to continue after you lock the device.
What can still happen while an iPhone is locked?
The screen is off and nothing is active
This is the cleanest locked state. If Screen Time rises continuously during a long idle period, check devices, apps, websites, and the accuracy of the report.
You wake or interact without unlocking
Checking notifications, widgets, Live Activities, timers, media controls, or the time can create real interaction while the iPhone remains locked.
Music or a podcast keeps playing
Background audio can continue with the display off. The audio app may appear in Screen Time, although the entry may not equal the complete listening session.
A route remains active
Spoken directions and location updates can continue after the display locks. That is usually useful phone activity, not evidence that you stared at the screen.
A conversation continues
A phone or FaceTime call can stay connected with the screen locked. Call duration, foreground display time, and the Screen Time entry may differ.
A dim Lock Screen remains visible
On supported models, Always-On Display can show the time, widgets, and notifications. Apple does not publish a simple rule saying every visible dimmed minute becomes Screen Time.
Why Screen Time may increase after you lock the phone
The report updated after the activity happened
Screen Time is not always an instant counter. A recent session can appear after you have already locked the iPhone, making the timing look causal when the report is simply catching up.
Another Apple device is included
With Share Across Devices enabled, an All Devices view can include activity from an iPad or Mac while your iPhone is locked. Select only the iPhone before testing.
An ongoing app task continued
Media, navigation, communication, and certain app tasks can remain active. Find the top app for the period instead of assuming the locked state itself caused the increase.
You used the Lock Screen repeatedly
Brief notification and widget checks can add up. The iPhone can remain locked while your attention still returns to it many times.
The report is wrong
If Screen Time shows hours of uninterrupted activity while the iPhone was untouched, save screenshots, restart, update iOS, and treat inaccurate attribution as a real possibility.
How to test whether Screen Time counts your locked iPhone
- Select only the iPhone. Open Settings, Screen Time, See All App & Website Activity, then choose the iPhone in Devices.
- Record the current entries. Note the total, Home & Lock Screen, and the leading apps. Take a screenshot so a delayed update does not confuse the comparison.
- Stop ongoing activities. Pause audio, end calls and navigation, then close any app that is visibly misbehaving.
- Lock the iPhone for a measured period. Leave it untouched for 30 to 60 minutes. Do not check notifications or use connected Apple devices during the test.
- Wait for the report to update. Reopen the same device and day view. Look for a meaningful change in one specific entry.
- Repeat with one activity. On a separate test, play audio or run navigation with the screen locked. Compare that app with the idle baseline.
The test will not reveal Apple's internal event log, but it can separate idle locked time from one ongoing activity on your own iPhone and iOS version.
How to read Home & Lock Screen activity
Home & Lock Screen is broader than idle locked time. It can include time spent between apps on the Home Screen as well as visible Lock Screen interactions. A high entry may come from many short checks rather than one long session.
Compare the category with pickups and notifications. If pickups are high and notifications are frequent, repeated glances may explain the activity. If Home & Lock Screen runs for hours with very few pickups, investigate Always-On Display and reporting accuracy instead.

Locked-screen use can still be useful phone time
Spoken directions, a study podcast, a workout playlist, a timer, an important message preview, or a phone call can support something you chose to do. Even when that activity appears in Screen Time, the number does not make it distracting by itself.
Focus on the outcome. A map that guided you home is different from waking the Lock Screen 50 times because every badge feels urgent. Reduce the repeated checks and open-ended sessions that take attention away from your plans, while keeping practical locked-screen tools available.

Questions people ask
Does Screen Time count when your phone is locked?
Idle locked time is not the same as active use. Lock Screen interaction, media, navigation, calls, combined devices, delayed updates, and reporting errors can still affect the report.
Does Screen Time keep counting after I lock my iPhone?
It may appear to if an activity continues or the report updates late. Select one iPhone and find the specific app or Home & Lock Screen entry that increased.
Does locked-screen audio count?
An audio app can appear in Screen Time, but its activity may not equal every minute of listening with the screen locked.
Why does Home & Lock Screen appear?
Wakes, notifications, widgets, Live Activities, media controls, and Home Screen use can contribute. It does not prove every idle locked minute counted.
Does Timo require a subscription?
Yes. Timo requires an active Pro subscription to use its app features.
